The Department of Justice is investigating McKinsey for advising opioid producers on boosting sales. The firm previously paid nearly $1 billion to resolve lawsuits related to its opioid work. The investigation is also looking at potential obstruction of justice by McKinsey and its employees. News of the investigation underscores how McKinsey's opioid work — which the firm said it stopped in 2019 — continues to plague the consultancy. In a 2018 email, for example, a since-fired McKinsey executive wrote to another senior executive about the firm's legal risk.

The Justice Department is investigating McKinsey & Company, the international consulting giant, for its role in helping drug companies maximize their sale of opioids. Since 2021, McKinsey has agreed to pay about $1 billion to settle investigations and lawsuits across the United States related to the firm’s work with opioid makers, principally Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin. McKinsey recommended that Purdue “turbocharge” its sales of the drug in the midst of the opioid crisis, which has killed hundreds of thousands of Americans. News of the criminal investigation was first reported by The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday. Last year another opioid maker, Mallinckrodt, said it received a grand jury subpoena from the same U.S. attorney’s office but did not mention any connection to McKinsey.

CNN —Liverpool’s chances of a historic quadruple in Jürgen Klopp’s final season at the club are over after falling to a 4-3 extra time defeat against bitter rival Manchester United in a frenetic FA Cup quarterfinal. Goals from Scott McTominay, Antony, Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo gave United the win in a topsy-turvy FA Cup classic at Old Trafford in Manchester. “The first 35 minutes I think was the best minutes from our season,” United manager Erik ten Hag told the ITV broadcast after the game. Rite Aid, one of the largest U.S. pharmacy retailers, stumbled under its high debt, revenue declines, increased competition, and opioid litigation, according to its court filings. Founded in 1962, Rite Aid employs 45,000 people at more than 2,000 retail stores in 17 states, and will remain open for business during the bankruptcy. New York CNN —Shares of Rite Aid were slightly lower Monday after soaring more than 20% higher in morning trading. The steep swings come after Rite Aid saw its price of shares tumble Friday amid reports that the drug store chain was preparing to file for bankruptcy. Shares of Rite Aid (RAD) are down more than 91% since this time last year. Friday’s plunge came after The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg reported that Rite Aid was preparing to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. CNN —After watching their team dismantle Zambia 5-0, several Japanese spectators won fans of their own as they stayed behind to clean the stands following their team’s opening Women’s World Cup match. Footage posted by the BBC showed several Japanese fans walking around the stadium with trash bags, picking up garbage left in the stands. Japanese fans have become known in recent years for their efforts to clean stands after they did so in matches at the men’s 2022 and 2018 World Cup and they were praised on social media for their efforts. Japan's players line up and acknowledge the crowd following their 5-0 win.
